Lean System

ZARA is a brand known for “Fast Fashion”. Fast fashion brands are well known from having their clothing go from design on paper to the store rack in a matter of weeks. The styles and the fashion trends usually are very similar to the styles and the fashion trends that are currently in season or hot on the runway. In order to achieve the speed and efficiency that fast fashion brands needs, they use what is called “Lean Systems”.

When a company uses the lean system, they analyze their production process and then minimize waste and delays so that production is at maximum efficiency and the company can get products out and fast as they can (usually to keep up with trends or fads). ZARA is famous for utilizing lean system and getting their trendy fashion design out to the consumers at the perfect time when the trend is hot and the demand is high. By fine tuning their systems and keeping their productivity high, ZARA is able to switch up their styles and looks easily and quickly, especially when it comes to seasonal changes in fashion. (spring, fall, summer, winter). ZARA also achieves this speed by using the “just in time” method aka “JIT”. Just in time strategy is essentially when a company manufactures how much product they need, when they need it. This strategy allows them to cut down on waste and increase their productivity simultaneously. Their productivity increases because they are not wasting time over-manufacturing products they don't need and they cut down on waste because they end up with a lot less unsold items

Zara’s ability to use lean systems effectively and “trim the fat” from their production process is the hidden secret to the retail giant’s success. ZARA’s production process keeps productivity high for 2 mains reasons. One of the main reasons for the high productivity is because ZARA produce their clothing in small batches. Producing in small batches allows ZARA to cut down on production time and get their clothes to their stores faster than other retailers would. The next reason why their lean production system is able to keep productivity high is because they manufacture their clothing themselves in multiple countries around the world. By doing this, they are able to cut down on shipping time and also avoid delays that they may face dealing with a 3rd party manufacturer. The fact that ZARA also manufactures their own clothing is another reason why their quality remains so high. When working with a 3rd party manufacturer, they may not put as much love, care and effort into the clothing that they produce due to the simple fact that it's just another job to them. Since ZARA manufactures their own clothing, they can ensure that their clothing quality remains high.
